SUMMARY:Book Club for Mortals: Driving Miss Norma
DESCRIPTION:\nNote: This session will be held in the Quiet Room on the
Library's second floor. Copies of the book are available for checkout at
the first floor service desk.\n\nThis month's Book Club for Mortals
selection is Driving Miss Norma by Tim Bauerschmidt and Ramie Liddle\,
about a transformative journey of living life on your own terms that shows
us that it's never too late to begin an adventure\, inspire hope\, or
become a trailblazer.\n\nWhen Miss Norma was diagnosed with uterine
cancer\, she was advised to undergo surgery\, radiation\, and chemotherapy.
But instead of confining herself to a hospital bed for what could be her
last stay\, Miss Norma\, newly widowed after nearly seven decades of
marriage\, rose to her full height of five feet and told her doctor\, "I'm
ninety years old. I'm hitting the road."\n\nAnd so Miss Norma took off on
an unforgettable around-the-country journey in a thirty-six-foot motor home
with her retired son Tim\, his wife Ramie\, and their dog\, Ringo.\n\nAs
this once timid woman says yes to living in the face of death\, she tries
regional foods for the first time\, reaches for the clouds in a hot air
balloon\, and mounts up for a horseback ride. With each passing mile (and
one educational visit to a cannabis dispensary)\, Miss Norma's health
improves\, and conversations that had once been taboo begin to unfold.
Norma\, Tim\, and Ramie bond in ways they never had before\, and their
definitions of home\, family\, and friendship broaden. Stop by stop\, state
by state\, they meet countless people from all walks of life\, strangers
who become fast friends and welcome them with kindness and open
hearts.\n\nCopies of the book are available for checkout at the first floor
service desk.\n\n\nAbout Book Club for Mortals\n\n\n\nThis is a book club
about aging wisely and well. We read a different book each month\, with
topics ranging from health and relationships to end-of-life issues\, from
the practical to the philosophical\, and from the serious to the
lighthearted. We discuss both fiction and nonfiction. This is a space for
open\, honest\, and thoughtful conversations about interesting books and
ideas. Discussions are led by Mindy Rickard\, our longtime host and advance
care planning advisor. The book club meets on the second Thursday of each
month.\n\nMore about this program\n\nWe'll need at least two registrations
to hold the discussion\, so we strongly encourage you to register. (You can
always cancel if you won't be able to join us.)\n\nEach month's book is
available for checkout at the first-floor service desk\, and you can search
our collection for additional copies and formats (eBook\, audiobook\, large
print\, etc.).\n\nOnline registrants should receive a reminder email with
the Zoom meeting link approximately one day before the program starts. If
you didn't receive the email or are having trouble connecting to the
meeting\, please call the Library at 970-586-8116\, and someone will assist
 you.\n\nRelated programs/resources\n\n\n	Advance directive resources\n
