Book Club for Mortals: Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging

Book Club for Mortals: Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging In-Person / Online

Temporary location change note: This session will be held in the Library's Quiet Room on the second floor.

An Easy and Comprehensive Guide to Keeping Your Body Young, Your Mind Sharp, and Your Spirit Fulfilled

Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging discusses the biology of aging — why we age and how to slow the aging process. It explores common health and lifestyle concerns and outlines steps readers can take to lead longer, more purposeful lives.

Researchers are finding that genes play a smaller role in overall health than most individuals realize. More often, the life people lead in their later years is a culmination of personal attitudes, decisions they made, and actions taken beginning in young adulthood. The book covers a variety of topics, including managing personal risks, challenging the brain and body, a healthy diet, physical activity, resilience, retirement planning, and living a fulfilling life.

The advice in Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging comes from a wide range of Mayo Clinic specialists, including staff from the Kogod Center on Aging. Discoveries by scientists at the Kogod Center suggest that aging may be controllable. The Center’s efforts focus on increasing the human “health span” — the number of years individuals spend living independently and free of age-related diseases and disabilities.

About Book Club for Mortals

This is a book club about aging wisely and well. We read a different book each month, with topics ranging from health and relationships to end-of-life issues, from the practical to the philosophical, and from the serious to the lighthearted. We discuss both fiction and nonfiction. This is a space for open, honest, and thoughtful conversations about interesting books and ideas. Discussions are led by Mindy Rickard, our longtime host and advance care planning advisor. The book club meets on the second Thursday of each month.
