Winter Hiking Tips and Safety In-Person

Learn how to stay safe and prepared for winter hikes and activities.

In collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Conservancy, join us for an evening of learning as we discuss important tips and tricks for staying safe and having fun while hiking in the winter. This program is open to everyone and is recommended for ages 12 and up.

This clinic will cover:

  • What to carry​
    • Layers, first aid, sun, and wind protection​
    • Cold-related injuries and illnesses​
    • Snowshoes, microspikes, and crampons​
  • When to go​
    • Weather​
    • Trail conditions
  • Where to go​
    • Introduction to mapping tools​
    • Winter navigation​
    • Avoiding avalanche terrain

The presentation will take about an hour, followed by roughly 30 minutes for questions (so bring yours!). Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop or smartphone that can access digital mapping apps or websites. Wi-Fi will be available at the Library.

About your instructor

Katie Colson is the Education Coordinator for the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. She is a Wilderness EMT and a member of the Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team. Katie has completed AIARE Level 1 and Companion Rescue avalanche courses and has experience in guided ice climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing.
