Join us for the Young Chautauqua kickoff party!

Young Chautauqua with a twist for 2026 - FICTIONAL CHARACTERS

To celebrate 10 years of performances in collaboration with the Estes Valley Library, in 2026 we are trying something a little different!  Instead of real historical people, this year’s participants will get to become their favorite storybook or novel characters. Imagine jumping into the skin of Huckleberry Finn, Scarlett O’Hara, or Harry Potter. Perhaps you’ve always wondered what it would be like to become Pippi Longstocking, Bilbo Baggins, or Katniss Everdeen in the middle of one of their incredible adventures. Tired of being human?  Become Charlotte or Wilbur or the White Rabbit! This will necessitate serious creative fun with costuming!

Participating in Young Chautauqua requires a significant commitment of time, study, and practice. In return, you'll have an amazing experience in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Participants begin by selecting a character they want to embody from a familiar work of literature.  They conduct an in-depth study of the storybook or novel, including a thorough understanding of the plot. They then consider the character’s personality traits, motivations, and interactions with other characters before writing an original script. Participants are welcome to team up as duos or trios, and ALL AGES ARE WELCOME! Perhaps a grandparent/grandchild duo - Grandpa Joe and Charlie? The possibilities are endless!

The program series ends with performances in February, all of which are open to the community. We'll gather to enjoy and celebrate your great work! Sixth grade teacher and acting coach Katherine Dumont facilitates this exciting adventure annually.
